D L Povey Guitars | About me

Firstly my name is Darren, I am 38 yrs old, married and have four lovely kids; currently I’m a lead guitarist in a heavy metal tribute band called Black Ironallica covering Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden and Metallica.

You could say that guitars are in my blood being born into a family of musicians; as far back as i can remember guitars are in my memories, at the age of around six or seven i remember my dad would tell us stories before we went to bed using his guitar and microphone for sound effects. I have an older brother who i have always admired and have inspired to make me the person i am today. So as you can imagine when my brother had his first guitar for Christmas one year, I wanted nothing else in the world but a guitar just like his, and when I heard him learning AC/DC songs that was it i was hooked for life, unfortunately being the little brother that always messed with his things he forbidden me from touching his pride and joy a gorgeous candy apple red guitar. I finally got my hands on my first guitar at the age of twelve which i saved up for and brought myself from a friend at school, it wasn't the best of guitars but it was cheap and had six strings. I remember i did not put that guitar down until my fingers where that blistered and sore that it was too painful to even press the strings down. "We've All Been There Right"? You could say that my guitar repairing days started with this guitar, this guitar had the body shape changed, resprayed with tins of car spray and frets filed with a match box, the things you do when you’re a kid, I just loved making things so it was no surprise that when I left school I did a joinery course.

So with my love of music and guitars my passion for making things from wood it was only a matter of time before the two were put together and i starting repairing and building guitars. I take great pride and care in my work so when I build a guitar, great attention is spent on tone of the timbers and I am always on the lookout for the finest grained timber to give the guitar a beautiful look. When I repair/set-up a instrument I am not happy until I have got that instrument to the best it can possibly be.
